You do not need to know music theory. You need to know where the phrase ends.
Almost all electronic music is built in bars of four beats, grouped into phrases of eight bars. That is 32 beats — roughly fifteen seconds at 128 BPM. Producers change something at the top of every phrase, and if you change something too, your lighting suddenly feels intentional instead of random.
The single most useful habit: change colour once per phrase, not per beat. Beginners flash colours constantly and it reads as noise. One well-timed colour change every fifteen seconds reads as taste.
A drop has three parts and each wants different light. The build gets busier and brighter — bring in more fixtures, speed up movement, let the room fill. The gap, that half-second of near silence right before the beat returns, wants a blackout: kill everything. The contrast makes the next part hit twice as hard. Then the drop itself: everything on, strobe for one or two bars, blinders once.
If you only remember one trick, remember that one. Blackout before, explosion after.
The strobe is the loudest thing you have. Used for two bars it is a punch. Used for a whole track it becomes wallpaper and stops meaning anything — and it genuinely hurts people after a while. Save it.
Thin beams look best moving slowly and deliberately. Two elegant sweeps across the room say more than ten frantic ones. Fast movement is a spice, not a base.
Every set has quiet parts, and the mistake is to keep the same intensity throughout. Learn a "low" look you can drop into: a mirror ball, a dim wash in one colour, everything else off. When the track opens up again, the return of the beams feels like an event.
Real lighting operators spend most of the night watching the DJ's hands and the crowd, not their own console. You will feel the change coming a beat before it happens, which is exactly the head start you need.

Pick one color per phrase — 16 or 32 bars — and change it on the one, exactly when the phrase turns. The room reads the change as part of the music. Cycling colors every bar reads as a screensaver. Two-color combinations (amber+cyan, red+white, magenta+blue) are the whole professional palette; rainbow mode is for testing that the fixtures work.
Lighting on a computer keyboard is playable exactly like a drum game: left hand on color keys, right hand on movement and effects, thumb on strobe held for bursts, and blackout under a finger you will not press by accident. Muscle memory beats menu diving — the whole reason this simulator plays like an instrument. Practise transitions until the blackout-into-drop lands without looking at the keys.
Cameras hate strobes slightly less than they used to, but three settings still decide everything: expose for the beams (underexpose the room by a stop), never autofocus into haze, and shoot at the venue frame rate's multiple to avoid strobe flicker banding (25/50fps in PAL countries, 30/60 in NTSC). Vertical crops love tunnels of beams and hate wide symmetrical rigs — build one tall look per set specifically for the phone camera.
How much strobe is too much? If you can remember the last strobe, it is too soon for the next one. Two or three moments per track, saved for the biggest hits, keeps its power. Continuous strobe for a full drop is a beginner tell — and an accessibility problem for photosensitive guests.
What if I do not know the track? Count anyway. Almost all techno turns in 8- and 16-bar phrases; hedge by making your changes small on uncertain turns and big when a fill or riser announces the real one.
Should lights hit every kick? The wash pulse can breathe with the kick, but save hard accents for the snare/clap or the phrase turn. Hitting everything is the visual version of clapping on every beat.
